The "blogosphere" favorite

So Robert "The Traveller" Hill plead guilty to forgery and now is ineligible to run for Pierce County Sheriff.

This is from the Tribune's Lights & Sirens blog: "Hill, who has enjoyed some dark horse celebrity status in the local blogsosphere, had little chance of unseating incumbent Paul Pastor."

Then on the Word of the Street blog: "Bad news, bloggers. In case you haven't heard, blogosphere favorite Robert "The Traveller" Hill is off November's ballot for Pierce County sheriff."

SayWA? Why did this become of the meme of the day? Because writing about someone makes him a favorite? Next time the Tribune reporter covers a murder case maybe we should call the criminal a "MSM favorite."

Another victory for THE CONSPIRACY!

No, the MSM favorite is the BBQ sandwich on a french roll.

Oh wait, we're not talking about Mike's Magical Sandwich Makers on Sixth Avenue? :)

I was just pointing out (in a fun way) that some local bloggers seem to like talking about Robert Hill. And, in all fairness, he's always entertaining.

I know, Scott. I was having a little fun too. He is entertaining.

I'm always interested in how blogs are portrayed in Tribune and other newspapers. So I thought it was kind of funny that when we're talking about a pro-masturbation, pro-blow-up-the-dome, pro-legalize-marijuana candidate, that's when he's a "dark horse celebrity" of the blogosphere.

Particularly because I see a lot more posts about The Traveller on the Tribune blogs than anywhere else:

And those are just from the Tribune blogs I follow ... :)

So you're saying you follow my blog, eh? I'm flattered. :)

Seriously, though, the Trib blogs (which are part of the aforementioned blogosphere) like to have a field day with The Traveller as well. I don't think anyone here denies that. And it's not exactly an apples-and-apples comparison to lump several of our blogs (written by different people about different beats, etc.) in the same category against, say, your blog or Exit133 or one of the others.

But while it's slowly changing, I would say that most of the Tacoma-centric blogs constitute a community of somewhat similar individuals, akin to how a neighborhood usually has somewhat similar people living in it.

That's not a bad thing at all (though I can't figure out the near-obsession with city council politics and the near-silence on the county council...). And the blogging community -- from guys who think downtown Tacoma is Times Square to the Trib blogs to others -- seem to get a kick out of Robert Hill.

I know what you're saying, Scott, and i don't think I'd argue with any of it.

I was struck by the two mentions right in a row that put The Traveller and the local blogosphere together.

And yes, I follow WOTS. I've just added it to my blogroll on the sidebar for others to find. See, now you're a blogosphere favorite, too! :)

Look forward to meeting you sometime, good sir.

I can only speak for what I wrote, and I guess I put that because the only place I've ever seen him mentioned is on blogs. At this point I could launch into a long reasoning about how that's precisely the kind of strengths a blog should play up (whereas newspapers and traditional media should focus on in-depth/investigative stuff), but I gotta get to a meeting.

And, btw, I'm moving to University Place in about two weeks. Isn't that your hood?

Ack, no! I'm a downtown dweller! Moved to downtown Tacoma in 2002. bought a condo in 2003. I've been downtown for 6 years!

Not that there's anything wrong with UP. I lived there until I was 6. I'm just proud to be an early downtown dweller.

Thanks for bringing this up, Erik. I also took note of the "bloggers favorite" passage. I would say he's more of a curiousity. And where else if not the TNT or the blogosphere would you expect to find The Traveller mentioned?

Fontaine: I completely disagree with your passage, "...Tacoma-centric blogs constitute a community of somewhat similar individuals, akin to how a neighborhood usually has somewhat similar people living in it." I have found the online community to be just as diverse, if not more so, than people in my neighborhood.

Maybe that means I need to move to a more interesting neighborhood, I don't know.

Erik: Come on back to UP, man. Ain't nothing wrong with bike lanes, sidewalks and smooth pavement!

Morgan: Not to go all sociologist, but there is some diversity on all neighborhoods. But on average, folks of the same stripe tend to congregate together. The Tacoma-area blogosphere is expanding, but much of it seems the same to me. If the event happens downtown or at an address with "N." in front of the street name, it's worthy of talking about. Otherwise, it seems to kind of gets lost in the background.

I could go on a bit more, but it's pushing midnight and I've got a big day of eating tomorrow. Yup, I'm getting paid to eat at Taste of Tacoma. Sweet!
