I don't read the physical paper much so I can't speak to the crinkling sound as I look around for bylines, but online the trib has author names associated with each comic. Trib comics page.
Sometimes they appear twice. Once as a byline above or below the strip, and then as the authors name in one of the panels. When it's a name in a panel I sometimes have difficulty making it out however.

I've noticed the lack of bylines, too. Very odd. They must have decided it saves space.

I could handle about 3/4 of the comics in the TNT just disappearing. B.C., Family Circus, Blondie, of course. Garfield has to go. Etc.

To REALLY read the comics, however, I refer you all to http://www.comicscurmudgeon.com/. A whole blog devoted to making fun of the comics. (Warning: may cause you to actually start reading Mary Worth)

Are there names/signatures not inside the strip? That's usually where I look for the author ... esp. since sometimes there are "guests." But I guess I have seen some place where they're listed up at the top ... hmmm ...
